Good morning. Today is the 349th day of the year. It is the death anniversary (1890) of Sitting Bull, Sioux Indian leader, medicine man and warrior. He was born in South Dakota, and first accompanied his father on the warpath at the age of 14 against the Crow. In 1866 he led a raid on Fort Buford. His refusal to have his tribe go to reservation led Gen. Phillip Sheridan to initiate a campaign against him, which led to the massacre at Little Bighorn. Afterward Sitting Bull fled to Canada, where he remained until 1881. He was killed in a skirmish with U.S. soldiers near the Grand River.
Well-known people who were born today include comedian Tim Conway, actor Garrett Wang, musician Dave Clark of the Dave Clark Five 9 (“Bits and Pieces,” “Glad All Over”) and tennis player Alexandra Stevenson.
