Good morning. Today is the 351st day of the year. It is the 20th anniversary of the TV premiere of The Simpsons. The originator of the animated family is cartoonist Matt Groening, who also is known for his popular newspaper cartoon strip Life in Hell. The Simpsons originally was a segment of another TV program, The Tracey Ullman Show, and then became a show of its own.
Well-known people who were born today include Brooklyn-born publisher Bob Guccione, British actor and singer Tommy Steele, baseball player Chase Utley and actor Ernie Hudson.
Today, the Brooklyn Public Library will sponsor a discussion, “The Simpsons:’ an Unauthorized History” (see above) at 7 p.m. at its main branch at Grand Army Plaza. Journalist John Ortved will offer a behind-the-scenes look into the Writers’ Room and through the making of an episode … BargeMusic at Fulton Ferry Landing will sponsor a jazz night with the Mark Soskin Trio at 8 p.m. Soskin, born in Brooklyn, has been active in the New York music scene since 1981.
