Good morning. Today is the 352nd day of the year. It is the birth anniversary (1912) of Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr., World War II hero and the son of the U.S. Army’s first black general. Davis Jr. was the first African-American to graduate from West Point in the 20th Century. He led the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, and he helped plan the integration of the U.S. Air Force in 1948-49.
Well-known people who were born today include producer-director Steven Spielberg (E.T., Indiana Jones, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, The Color Purple), actress Katie Holmes, movie critic Leonard Matlin and singer Christina Aguilera.
At 11 a.m., the Catholic Charities’ Farragut Children’s Center, located within the Farragut housing projects, will celebrate 40 years of service to the children and families of Fort Greene. There will be a day of celebration, including music and dance performances. …Also, today at 1:15 p.m., the Dyker Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library at 8202 13th Ave. will host a concert by several soloists from the Regina Opera, featuring selections from operas and Broadway shows. …Today, at the Atlantic Center Shopping Mall, the Granny Peace Brigade and the Raging Grannies will demonstrate in front of Target at 3:30 p.m. against war toys. …
Both tomorrow and Sunday, the American Cancer Society’s Brooklyn Regional Office and IKEA will sponsor special breakfast fundraisers to fight cancer. All of the revenue from all breakfasts sold between 9:30 and 11 a.m. at the store will be donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. …On Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m., St. Mark’s R.C. School will sponsor a celebrity caroling concert and toy drive. Among the performers will be Vince Martell of the Vanilla Fudge, recording artist Peg Peral and Greg Bravo of Steam (“Na Na, Hey Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye”). Admission is free with an unwrapped new toy. The school is located at Jerome Avenue and East 19th Street in Sheepshead Bay. ... On Sunday, NY1 TV news host Budd Mishkin and Professor Vasily Kolchenko will honor Russian singer-songwriter Bulat Okuzhava on the occasion of his 85th birthday with a concert of Russian music at the Shorefront YM-YWHA at 5 p.m. The Shorefront Y is located at 3300 Coney Island Ave.
