Scarano Wins 2 From NY-SARA
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 07-17-2007

Says It Was an Honor to be Recognized Alongside
Renzo Piano, Frank Sciame at Ceremony

Brooklyn architect Robert M. Scarano Jr. received two awards from the New York Society of American Registered Architects (NY-SARA) at the society’s annual awards ceremony June 26 at Battery Gardens in Manhattan.

Scarano received the Housing Award of Merit for his Manhattan Park Condos design, a Brooklyn project, and an Award of Honor for Projects in Design Phase for his design of a high-tech residential tower along the Jackson Avenue corridor in Queens.

At the same awards ceremony, the society acknowledged the success of the Morgan Library Addition, designed by famed Italian architect Renzo Piano, by naming it “Project of the Year,” and presented contractor Frank J. Sciame the coveted Medallion of Honor for his involvement in that project and for his physical contributions to the city.

“Manhattan Park Condos, designed by Robert Scarano and Sasha Pustylnik, is a striking wood-clad high-rise that has introduced a fresh attitude toward visual qualities in the heart of Brooklyn’s North-Side Williamsburg section,” wrote the society. “Set against the backdrop of small wood-sided homes, the building recasts this corner, directly across from McCarren Park, into a vibrant people place.”

The Jackson Avenue project, designed by Robert Scarano, David Blaustein and Naoyuki Shiiya, is a mixed-use residential and commercial building in Long Island City, “which introduces amenities that pamper individuals who work hard and value their free time as well.”

In his acceptance speech, Scarano thanked his talented staff and his visionary clients, referred to the past two years as “extremely challenging” and stressed the significance of this recognition from his educated piers.

“What my firm does best is create good environments for living from the inside out,” he said. “These awards are a reminder that we are making positive changes, and the public need not be distracted by political or other individual agendas. It is an honor for me to receive these awards along with Renzo Piano, Frank Sciame, Stephen B. Jacobs and other great masters of our time.”
