New Cambria Suites Hotel Coming to Downtown Brooklyn

Will Add 300 Needed Hotel Rooms, Eliminates One More Public Parking Facility

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — As first reported yesterday on CNNMoney.com, a new Cambria Suites hotel is coming to Downtown Brooklyn.

The new hotel, to be called Cambria Suites Brooklyn Bridge, is slated for 75 Schermerhorn St., between Court Street and Boerum Place.

David Peikin, senior director of corporate communications at the Silver Spring, Md.-based Choice Hotels International, owner of the Cambria Suites brand, told the Brooklyn Eagle that the company has indeed executed its first franchise agreement for the Brooklyn location with PLC Partners LLC of New York City.

The property, a through-lot to Livingston Street, is currently the site of a very busy parking lot and will further decrease parking options for workers at downtown businesses, the courts and office buildings as well as for residents of nearby Boerum Hill and Brooklyn Heights.

The 11-story hotel will have 300 rooms plus all the amenities of other Cambria Suites franchises, according to Peikin — including a swimming pool, fitness center, onsite barista coffee bar, meeting rooms, flat screen televisions, and high-speed and wireless capability.

The new brand has few urban locations, so far, said Peikin, citing only one in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. “But the brand works pretty well in a variety of locations,” he said. “We think it will be a strong performer here.”

Peikin estimates the franchisee will break ground in January 2008 with completion anticipated for late 2009.

Said Dan Hagan of PLC Partners, in the CNNMoney.com article, “The dynamic transformation of Brooklyn has been remarkable. It continues to expand as a primary destination for both business and leisure travelers, and the Cambria Suites Brooklyn Bridge will fully cater to the modern lifestyle demands of these travelers.”

The Cambria Suites brand is for travelers who want style, luxury and superb amenities without having to pay a premium for a hotel stay, according to Hagan.

As of June 30, there were 60 Cambria Suites hotel franchises under contract in 26 states and Canada, and 858 Choice hotels under development in the U.S.
