‘Raw Piece of Land’ Near IKEA on Market

Property Ideal for ‘Wholesale/Retail Lowes-Type’ Development

RED HOOK — A large vacant property in Red Hook with retail development potential is on the market. The site, at 640 Columbia St. (aka 588 Columbia St.), is 176,429 square feet and would allow up to 352,858 square feet of development, according to David Junik, a senior director with Greiner-Maltz, who has the exclusive listing on behalf of the owners.

There is no asking price; Junik is seeking offers.

The current owners bought it “to take advantage of IKEA coming in, but have since realized it should be developed by someone experienced in building retail,” said Junik.

Junik adds that it is very difficult to find a large enough site to build retail in Brooklyn these days but he believes there is and will be a greater demand for it.

The large property, which he describes as “a raw piece of land,” is ideal for a “wholesale/retail, Lowes-type of place,” one that can take advantage of the car traffic that will already be coming to IKEA or even to the nearby Fairway.

“It’s perfectly situated. Anyone going to IKEA will have to pass by this property,” he said.
