The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), in its approved 2008-2012 budget, allocated $40 million towards the renovation of the Walt Whitman and Raymond V Ingersoll houses in Brooklyn. These buildings, originally constructed in 1944, were never intended as permanent residences, but instead as temporary housing for World War II veterans.
NYCHA will also be dedicating $22 million to the Red Hook Houses, according to a recent report. These funds will be used to complete work on the roofs, façades and brickwork of the Red Hook Houses, East and West.
Additionally, funds were allocated to replace water meters in various developments in Brooklyn to better determine residents' water usage and then take measures to conserve water.
In other news from NYCHA, three Brooklyn housing projects are celebrating anniversaries this year. The Sumner Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant celebrated their 50th anniversary, the Brownsville Houses in Brownsville celebrated their 60th and the Williamsburg Houses celebrated their 70th year.
