Lab Part of New Biotech Center at Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park
BROOKLYN ARMY TERMINAL — Mayor Michael Bloomberg helped launch the new AIDS Vaccine Design and Development Laboratory last week at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) in Sunset Park.
The first occupant of a biotech center created by the city at the BAT, this new lab will be exclusively devoted to the development of an AIDS vaccine but will also help train the next generation of AIDS vaccine specialists in New York and worldwide, according to Bloomberg.
Brooklyn was selected because New York is a global city, and “there are few global problems more pressing than AIDS.”
In addition to Bloomberg, world leaders in public health were also on hand for the Nov. 12 ceremony, including Seth Berkley of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI); Dennis Burton of the IAVI Neutralizing Antibody Consortium and Scripps Research Institute; and Salim Abdool-Kari of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa
