Work on DumboSpace ‘Moving Ahead’

Little Feather Works Creates ‘First of Its Kind’ Theater Venue

DUMBO — Coming to DUMBO in the spring (estimated) is a unique new theater, recording studio and gallery.

To be called DumboSpace, the new performance venue at 192 Water St., is a project of Little Feather Works, a non-profit organization that will also run DumboSpace programs.

Construction of the theater, which will take up three levels — the basement and first two floors — is moving right along, according to Solbong Kim.

Kim is the artistic director of DumboSpace and president of Little Feather Works.

“Little Feather Works has a lease on the property, and is governed by the directors and the members of the board,” said Kim, who brings a composing and creative background and knowledge of the music industry to the project.

The three levels of this renovated warehouse building — the former home of the Jones Brothers Tea Co. — will house a 200-seat theater, a recording studio capable of accommodating a 50-piece orchestra, a post-production equipped facility and a gallery.

“This multi-purpose arrangement will cater to the needs of both individual recording artists and large-scale productions,” said Kim.

According to DumboSpace.com, the 200-seat theater will be the “first of its kind” in a variety of ways. “The main theater is optimized for live recording of performances and is HD broadcast-ready, so theatergoers can have a genuine sense that they are participating in history in the making,” according to the web site.

“We ensure the best acoustical experience by the use of floated stage floors and ceiling, which decreases outside noise interference and creates an experience that is powerful and distraction-free. “Through the juxtaposition of seating with the stage, we strive to break the psychological boundaries between the artist and audience that are often present in modern day theaters.”

And all of that is primarily due to the “superior acoustical engineering” of the following:

• Architect Giuliano Fiorenzoli, a professor at Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture and Parson’s School of Design and the designer of the National Gallery for the Arts of Ottawa, among others. • SIA Acoustics, known for its work at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Hollywood Bowl and the Nokia Theater and for events like Central Park SummerStage and Cirque du Soleil. In addition, SIA is known for developing SIA-SMAART, the industry-leading acoustical measurement and sound system optimization software.
