DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — Duffield Street in Downtown Brooklyn may soon be known as “Hotel Row.” On a block with three other hotels under construction, a fourth is planned, it was announced Monday.
V3 Hotels, the company already building the 24-story, 164-room Hotel Indigo at 237 Duffield St., reports it will build a 19-story, 130-room hotel nearby at 231 Duffield St., set to open in 2011.
According to Greg Atkins, director of development for V3, the company is confident in the area’s viability as a growing business district, and even with the other hotel projects currently in construction, there will only be a total of 2,500 rooms in the downtown area.
“Downtown Brooklyn is the fastest growing district in New York City, seeing an increased volume of visitors, and we have found that there is still great demand for hotel rooms,” he said. “With new restaurants, retailers, cultural attractions, businesses, residential buildings and growing enrollment at area colleges, V3 is striving to meet the needs of this thriving borough.”
A search of Department of Buildings records revealed a demolition permit for the existing three-story commercial building. No approvals are needed, according to Atkins, who said work on the foundation is expected to start in the middle of next week.
V3 Hotels is self-financing the project, estimated to cost $20 million.
The new hotel, to be designed by architect H. Thomas O’Hara, will have a “unique presence along the block,” with its red artesian textured brick and matching mortar, which will give it a “seamless verticality” while the angular façade will give each room a different view floor by floor.
“We created something that stands alone from others, offering a memorable experience for the guests,” said O’Hara. “We have achieved this by including an ever-changing lighted wall that will bring the large façade to life, while the wood panel base brings the warmth of the building to a human scale.”
The boutique hotel will be comfortable as well as affordable, and it will have more than 1,500 square feet of ground floor retail space, Atkins said.
