Worrisome Hole in the ‘Candy Factory’ Roof May Finally Be Repaired

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS --- An enormous hole in the roof of the besieged Peaks Mason Mints building at 20 Henry St. has exposed the upper floors of the stalled luxury condominium to the elements since winds blew apart the protective tarp months ago.

In February, a complaint was filed with the DOB about debris blowing off the roof and the protective tarp blowing around in high winds. This was followed by the rainiest spring in recent memory, during which the tarp shredded and water poured into the upper floors of the building.

Other complaints were received by neighbors worried about falling into a huge pit dug for a second building in what used to be 20 Henry’s sculpture garden.

In May, and again earlier this month, a neighbor complained to the DOB that 20 Henry was “shaking and vibrating,” possibly due to structural instability caused by the exposure to the elements.

Now there may finally be some help for what was once a Mitchell-Lama building inhabited by artists, and before that an actual candy factory. On July 23, the developers received approval from the Department of Buildings for emergency roof repairs estimated to cost $39,120. Calls to the building’s owners and the company handling the repairs were not returned.

Construction work on the development was halted in April when, according to the Brownstoner blog, a lawsuit was initiated by AIG against developers Shelly Listokin, Stan Listokin and David Tropper of Urban Realty Partners for “breach of their contractual obligations.”

In March, sales were suspended at the luxury condominium development and the rental office several blocks away, at 114 Henry St., was shuttered.
