KENSINGTON — A new public library will soon rise in Kensington. The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) broke ground last week on the new site, a vacant lot at 4207 18th Ave., between East Second and East Third streets, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined in the ceremony with BPL officials, area council members, Department of Design and Construction (DDC) representatives and community leaders at the new Kensington Library location.

The BPL is currently providing library services to the community from a leased facility at 410 Ditmas Ave.

The new Kensington Library project, which received support from Markowitz’s office, will be the first “green” BPL library building, as well as a state-of-the-art ADA-compliant facility, according to BPL officials.

The 16,884-square-foot two-story, 38-foot-tall building will include self-check machines, external book drops and First Five Years, teen and adult reading and activity spaces.

The design is by Sen Architects; the DDC is overseeing the project’s construction.
