Dewey’s Candy Leases Space in DUMBO

DUMBO — A new candy store is expected to open in DUMBO in time for the holidays.

Proprietor Alison Dewey Oblonsky has signed a five-year lease for 900 square feet of retail space at 141 Front St., at the corner of the Pearl Street Triangle, according to Suzanne Schwimmer of Schwimmer Realty.

Schwimmer represented the tenant in the lease deal along with Lisa Rosenthal of the Lansco Corporation. The landlord, Chatov LLC, owner of the large building also known as 68 Jay St., was represented in-house.

Oblonsky told Schwimmer the store’s name, Dewey’s Candy, comes from the nickname given her by her father when she was 2 years old. The name is still endearingly used by many of her friends and family, and she wants to dedicate the store in memory of her dad, Freddy O, who shared his passion for candy with his little girl.”

A DUMBO resident for the past six years, she has “a strong visual merchandising background, having worked for Victoria's Secret, Donna Karan and Ellen Tracy,” said Schwimmer.

Commented Oblonsky, “I am looking to create a new space in DUMBO that will invite customers to stop in and buy their favorite childhood candies, while also creating a child-friendly and welcoming atmosphere. With today’s challenging economy, nothing makes people smile more than a stroll back through time with some of their favorite childhood treats.”

In designing the concept for her store, she wanted one that would “exude happiness, fun, and be inviting to people of all ages.”

In addition to nostalgic candies, the store will offer assortments and gift items, as well as private event party space for children and adults.

Schwimmer said she enjoyed working with Oblonsky and Rosenthal.

“Alison’s clarity about her space requirements and her enthusiasm and dedication to realizing her vision for us Brooklyn folk, made searching for the right space a wonderful project. Lisa was a great partner in the search in every sense of the word.”
