Honoring ‘Green’ Boerum Hill
by Trudy Whitman (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 09-16-2005

They’ve done it again, and Boerum Hill’s success in picking up awards in the annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest was duly noted by the eminent judges of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden: “Atlantic Avenue blocks consistently earn top honors.” This year, with the help of the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation, our emerging grand boulevard garnered four awards. The commercial First Place winner was Hoyt Street—the Victory Gardens block between Atlantic and State. Following close behind in Third Place was the Atlantic Avenue block between Third and Nevins (north side). The south side of the same stretch received Honorable Mention. Stan’s Place, a restaurant on Atlantic between Bond and Nevins, received Third Place in the storefront category. State Street between Hoyt and Bond also received an honorable mention in the residential category.

A big green thumbs up for Boerum Hill!

Creative Arts Studio, 310 Atlantic Avenue, is celebrating its 10th year of offering dance, drama, music, and art classes to the community. Director Sherri Hellman says that she opened Creative Arts to provide a venue “where one’s true talents can be discovered, encouraged, and unleashed away from the pressures of peers and school.”

Having outgrown its original home on Bergen Street, CAS moved to its fresh, light-filled space on Atlantic Avenue several years ago, allowing it to expand its program to include classes for children 18 months through young teens. There are also classes for adults, including ballroom, Latin, and swing dancing; adult ballet; writers’ workshop; and knitting.

Children’s dance classes for the fall run the gamut from pointe technique to hip hop. The drama program includes out-of-the-ordinary options such as the clown club and stage combat. There is puppet- and mask-making, art playgroups, and knitting and crocheting. An extensive writing program includes creative comics, playwriting, and songwriting.

The entire neighborhood is invited to help celebrate Creative Arts Studio’s 10th anniversary at a dance party on Saturday, October 15, from 8 to 10 p.m. The evening’s entertainment will be in the capable hands of tunemaker River Alexander’s Mad Jazz Hatters. For details call 718 797-5600.

Friends of Brooklyn Community Board 6, a non-profit group established to support the work of the board, is looking for a few good men and women. Volunteers are needed for work essential to the health of the Community Board. CB 6 would like to work with a pro bono professional accountant who can help with non-profit organization compliance and the preparation of an audited annual financial statement. The community board also has volunteer work for grant writers, graphic artists and a website designer. In addition they are looking for a newsletter editor to commit time on a monthly basis to develop and maintain an Internet-based newsletter. Urban planners—professional or student—would also be helpful in providing project-based or ongoing assistance to the various Community Board committees.

Those interested in giving back to their community in this unique manner are asked to contact District Manager Craig Hammerman at 718 643-4752 or FBCB6@BrooklynCB6.org.

The Hoyt Street Association Community Funding Project (HSACFP) is accepting proposals for grants from not-for-profits serving the Boerum Hill neighborhood. The new annual grant program was initiated by the Hoyt Street Association to help fund—with profits from its annual plant sale—neighborhood improvement projects.

Proposals must be submitted from organizations whose services fall within the Boerum Hill boundaries: Schermerhorn and Warren streets to the north and south, and Fourth Avenue and Court Street to the east and west. Proposals for the HSACFP grants should also address one or more of the following needs: encourage cleanliness, orderliness, beautification, or preservation; improve public safety or quality of life; support educational or cultural activities for residents; promote harmony among diverse elements of the neighborhood.

Applications must be postmarked by September 20, 2005, and mailed to Hoyt Street Association, 124 Hoyt Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217-2215. Grantees will be named in January 2006. For additional information, call 718 237-0145.
