BAY RIDGE — Kelly Lewis and Michael Gugel, who live in Bay Ridge, recently started a web site that helps residents — and parents, in particular — find college students for short-term jobs like babysitting, tutoring, dog walking, running errands, and more.
The site, CollegeQuickJobs.com, was launched less than a month ago in the New York area, and more than 200 students have already signed up and dozens of jobs have been posted.
How did the word get out? With a strange sight in Park Slope: A “robot,” made of cardboard, tape and metallic spray paint, was seen walking down Seventh Avenue.
The robot was created to promote the website, according to Lewis and Gugel.
“Usually, people tend to avoid someone handing out flyers, but people were pulling over in their cars and crossing the street just to take ours,” said Kelly Lewis, one of the founders of the site.
Lewis and Gugel created the original site more than a year ago while they were still undergraduates at the University of Virginia. After graduating last May, they moved to Brooklyn, spent months redeveloping the site from the ground up, and launched it here in early April.
“You can post a job and view student resumes for free. If you like what you see, you can purchase the phone number and email address of three students for $12.99,” Gugel said.
CollegeQuickJobs.com currently serves the New York metropolitan area and Charlottesville, Virginia. Expansion to Boston, Washington DC, and Philadelphia is planned, the partners said.
