Break-in At Prospect Park?
Burglary Leads to New $10K Security System at Wollman Rink

PROSPECT PARK -- The Prospect Park Alliance is in the process of installing a new, beefed-up security system around the Kate Wollman Ice Skating Rink in response to a break-in at the rink’s concession office last Friday.

The new system, estimated to cost just under $10,000, is being put in after thieves broke into the rink’s concession building last week between Friday night and Saturday morning in the second Prospect Park burglary last week.

The ice rink thieves broke into employee lockers sometime after the last workers left at 11 p.m. Friday, making off with $800 in cash, a cell phone and a digital camera, according to the police report. “This was a bit of a wake-up call,” Thomas said. She would not say specifically what the security improvements entailed, but added that the Alliance sought consultation from the 78th Police Precinct and the Parks Department.

In an earlier incident last week, thieves broke into the park’s Picnic House between the night of Monday, Dec. 4 and the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 5 and stole $200 in cash and two cell phones locked inside a safe box. The burglary happened sometime after employees left at 8 p.m. Monday.

Tupper said that she thought it was “very unusual” for burglars to target the Picnic House, because very little cash is kept in the building and it is heavily secured. Tupper said she thought the thieves “knew what they were doing,” how to get into the building and when it would be empty. Tupper, who was appointed the park’s first administrator in 1980, said that break-ins are extremely rare. She added that throughout her 27-year involvement, she can never remember two so close together.

“When you think we’re 570 acres of land right in the middle of Brooklyn, Prospect Park has really seen very little of this sort of thing,” she said.
