Child Found Hung to Death in Closet
MILFORD AVENUE – A 12-year-old girl found hanging in her closet late Monday night at her East New York home managed to survive briefly, but later died.
Maria Herrera’s mother discovered her young daughter hanging by her neck from a cloth belt inside her bedroom closet. She was rushed to Brookdale Hospital by emergency medical technicians, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Maria’s mother found her daughter not breathing, but still alive around 8:30 p.m., after she had searched the house looking for her girl and couldn’t find her. The little girl had been left at home in the care of her stepfather, who reportedly had refused to allow the girl to visit a friend.
Police are investigating the possible suicide.
Indictment Issued for High-School Stabbing
CROWN HEIGHTS – On Monday, a 16-year-old student from Paul Robeson High School was indicted for attempted murder and assault for stabbing a classmate last week outside the school’s cafeteria.
Tareeq Blackwood is charged with stabbing Kyle Owens, 18, multiple times on March 28. Doctors believe Owens, who currently is on a hospital respirator, will survive but remain paralyzed below the waist.
Blackwood, a sprinter on the school’s track team, and Owens, a honors student, reportedly were involved in a dispute prior to the stabbing.
Police Arrest Two Men in Their 20s for Murders
EAST NEW YORK – The New York Post is reporting that a man from Binghamton was arrested and charged with murder after he allegedly shot and killed a man at a Brooklyn housing complex.
Alfred McCune, 27, fatally shot a 58-year-old Long Island man in the parking lot of the Breukelen Houses on East 108 St. on March 31, police said. McCune, who has a criminal history, was arrested last Thursday and charged with murder.
An East New York man was also arrested in connection with a separate shooting death. Anthony Matthews, 21, was apprehended on Sunday and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Marvelle Jackson, 25, was shot several times in the lobby of 340 Miller Ave. on Dec. 21, 2007, police said.
He later died at Brookdale Hospital.
