Ft. Greene Residents Respond to Rape of Local Female Physician

FORT GREENE — In an effort to call attention to a recent sexual assault against a young female doctor in Fort Greene, a demonstration was called Friday in the area of the incident.

On Thursday morning at approximately 6 a.m., police said, a 30-year-old woman, a doctor practicing at nearby Brooklyn Hospital, was assaulted and raped. The perpetrator also took her handbag, and she had to be treated at the hospital. As of press time, no suspects had been apprehended, though the investigation was continuing.

Police reports of the incident stated the woman was approached and accosted, told to remain silent, then forced to a secluded location in the immediate vicinity where she was raped.

A brief description of the assailant was circulated by the department’s information bureau, describing the attacker as a black male wearing a black scarf and dark clothes. The suspect was also described as having “a Nigerian accent,” according to the news alert sent out by police.

In addition to the release of the attack, word on the local blogosphere began as early as Friday morning, a day after the assault, calling attention to what is being seen as a growing problem of violence against women.

Local City Councilwoman Letitia James’ office had an integral part in organizing the demonstration, which was scheduled at the very intersection where the recent attack occurred.

Anyone with information about any of the above incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at (800) 577-TIPS.
