Unique World Premiere at Green-Wood Cemetery:‘The Stories Never End, The Love Never Dies’
by Brooklyn Eagle (), published online 05-04-2007

Will Restore Monument to Teen Who Died in 1845
On Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13, Historic Green-Wood Cemetery will present a “world premiere” fundraising theatrical event celebrating the wonderful stories of the people there performed by students at Holy Name School in Windsor Terrace. Called “The Stories Never End, The Love Never Dies,” all proceeds will benefit the Green-Wood Historic Fund efforts and help restore the monument of Charlotte Canda, a seventeen year old girl who died in a tragic accident in 1845.

This performance, a collaboration between the School and Green-Wood, was created by the honor students of Holy Name’s community service group — The Aquinas Circle. After a visit to Green-Wood last fall, they felt inspired to stage a fundraiser to support Green-Wood’s ongoing historic preservation program.

Among the show’s highlights: students will assume the roles of Henry Chadwick (1824–1908), “The Father of Baseball;” McDonald Clarke (1798-1842) known in his day as “The Mad Poet of Broadway;” and maestro Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) buried atop Battle Hill, the highest point in Brooklyn.

“By helping to preserve our storied history, the students at Holy Name School are ensuring that Green-Wood Cemetery will live on in the future,” said Richard J. Moylan, president of Green-Wood Cemetery. “These civic-minded students are to be commended for their active participation with the Green-Wood Historic Fund and for their contributions to this community and to New York City. I know they have been working hard and I am sure it will be an exciting performance.”

The initiative is spearheaded by Steven Estroff, Green-Wood’s Manager of School Programs. A 15-year educator, Estroff has guided the students from The Aquinas Circle to research the many colorful characters at Green-Wood. The show is part historic tour and part interactive theatre.

“The Stories Never End, The Love Never Dies” will be performed on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 (Mother’s Day). There are two shows each day. On May 12th the first show is at 10 a.m., the second is at 3:30 p.m. On May 13th, the first show is at 12:30 p.m. and the second is at 3:30 p.m.

Admission is $10. To purchase tickets and for more information, visitors should call Green-Wood Cemetery at (718) 768-7300 or e-mail Steven Estroff at StevenE@green-wood.com. Advanced purchase is advised.
