Come September, International School of Brooklyn (ISB) the French and Spanish bi-lingual immersion school will be moving to the former school building of Saint Mary Star Of The Sea, a Catholic Church on Court Street in Carroll Gardens. ISB is currently located in Prospect Heights.
ISB, which follows the International Baccalaureate curriculum, experienced a 28 percent increase in applications for the 2009-2010 school year, but could only admit 31 new families. With the move, the school hopes to double their enrollment next year, and meet an eventual capacity of 250 students.
The building boasts large sunlit classrooms, as well as space for art and music classrooms, a cafeteria, an onsite playground and additional administrative space.
ISB was launched by Dr. Habiba Boumlik and Executive Director Rebecca Skinner in March 2003. “We are thrilled to once again expand ISB to reach our goals for growth and development and to continue to meet the needs of Brooklyn families for quality education with a global outlook,” said Skinner. The new location is scheduled to open its doors to pre-K through fourth grade students in September.
“Teach Local, Reach Global: The ISB Expansion” is a $500,000 campaign to raise funds over the next year to complete the renovations and improvements to the Carroll Gardens facility. The Campaign Committee, comprised of board members, parents, and friends of ISB, reported raising $130,000 so far.
The school opened in the fall of 2005 with 16 preschool students in two classrooms. Today, they serve more than 100 children in grades nursery to third and more than 300 students participate in enrichment programs. ISB plans to grow each year, along with its students, ultimately reaching the 12th grade.
Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis for first through fourth grades. Further admissions information can be found on ISB’s web site: www.isbrooklyn.org.
