Good morning. Today is the 182nd day of the year. On this day in 1997, Britain relinquished its claim to Hong Kong, and the flag of the British crown colony of Hong Kong was lowered for the last time. Britain had leased Hong Kong from China, and the lease was set to expire on July 1. Rather than negotiate a new lease, Britain ceded its claim to the area.
Well-known people who were born today include Brooklyn-born actor Vincent DâOnofrio (âLaw and Order: Criminal Intent,â âFull Metal Jacketâ), actor David Alan Grier (âA Soldierâs Storyâ), Brooklyn-born former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and Brooklyn-born singer-actress Lena Horne (âStormy Weather,â âJamaicaâ).
