Joel Silverman, host of Animal Planet’s “Good Dog U,” will make an appearance at the next Love Wanted pet adoption event in Bay Ridge on June 6.
An avid and serious animal lover, Silverman has worked in nearly every theme park in Southern California, according to his web site, training killer whales at Sea World, dolphins at Knott’s Berry Farm and Magic Mountain, and birds, dogs, and cats at Universal Studios.
“Silverman has taken dogs from the shelters and trained them to work as movie dogs and on commercials,” Love Wanted organizer Mary Jo Tobin writes. “He is excellent at what he does and has a terrific website that you should all take a look at before the event — www.companionsforlife.net. I hope that you will all welcome him warmly on the 6th and spread the word to all your animal-loving friends that this is someone they might really enjoy watching in action.”
Silverman has written a book called, “What Color is Your Dog?” which he will be signing for anyone who wishes to purchase a copy. In addition, he will host two demonstrations for the crowd, at noon and 2 p.m. “Silverman’s approach to training dogs is very different than most,” says Tobin, “thus the title of his book.”
She adds that during research for her speech to the Dyker Civic Association on May 12, she learned that more than 9,700 pets were put to sleep at the ACC on Linden Blvd. in 2007, and in 2008 the number was more than 9,500. “Keep in mind that these numbers are just for Brooklyn!” she says.
Tobin organizes monthly adoption events in greater Bay Ridge for animals who need homes — shelter animals and others that are unwanted by owners — often when it is a matter of life and death. Tobin and her team of 60 volunteers have saved the lives of more than 1,280 cats and dogs since she began her mission in 2004.
This event will be held at Salem Church, 450 67 St. (between 4th and 5th avenues) on Saturday, June 6, at 11:30 a.m., rain or shine.
