FORT GREENE PARK: Julia Vogl, Leaves of Fort Greene. Through July 10. Vogl is an independent artist whose installation explores how light colors our experience. Large plexi-glass panels embellished with images of enlarged foliage layered in translucent paint rely on the movement of sunlight to create ever-changing combinations of pattern, color and light. Target First Saturday. July 4, from 5:30–11 p.m. Free program of arts and entertainment. Celebrating Independence Day and the diverse cultures of America with six hours of continuous live music including performances by the Mandingo Ambassadors, Alex Battles and the Whisky Rebellion, the Shondes, and Samba Nation Batucada. The evening’s Dance Party features DJ Cosmo Baker spinning disco and hip-hop.

Eating Contest

THE CONEY ISLAND ‘BOOM A RING’ CROSS-SPECIES EATING CONTEST: July 3, at 11 a.m. It’s humans vs. elephants in this fully sanctioned cross-species eating contest between three Major League Eaters and three Ringling Bros¼ Asian elephants. The following day, the human contestants will also participate in the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest. The contest will take place on the boardwalk.
