Brooklyn Today: Wednesday, September 2, 2009
by Brooklyn Eagle (edit@brooklyneagle.net), published online 09-02-2009

Good morning. Today is the 245th day of the year. It is the anniversary of the beginning of the Great Fire of London (1666). The fire is credited with bringing about the idea of fire insurance as we know it today. It started in the wooden house of a baker near the Tower of London. During the next few days more than 13,000 houses were destroyed, although it is believed that only six lives were lost.

Well-known people who were born today include sportscaster Terry Bradshaw, former tennis player Jimmy Connors, actress Marge Champion, college basketball coach John Thompson and former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth.

KOSHER SUPERMARKET Celebrates First Birthday.

Pomegranate on Coney Island Avenue, a gourmet kosher marketplace, celebrated its first birthday last month, hosting more than 2,500 guests.

Hundred-dollar gift certificates were awarded to anyone celebrating birthdays on the same day, and the grand prize of two round-trip tickets to Israel went to Miriam Kaufman of Flatbush.

The crowd was also treated to performances by children’s entertainer Country Yossi; magician John Prizzi; and the singing of Lipa Schmeltzer, Yeedle Werdyger and Benny Omar.

In addition to offering gourmet kosher food, the store hosts monthly events and culinary demonstrations featuring celebrity kosher chefs.
