Good morning. Today is the 299th day of the year. It is the anniversary of the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Ariz., in 1881. The three Earp brothers (Deputy Marshals Wyatt and Morgan Earp and Marshal Virgil Earp) and dentist Doc Holiday faced off against the Clanton and McLaury brothers, all of whom were gang members. When the smoke cleared, Billy Clanton and Frank and Thomas McLaury died, while Virgil and Morgan Earp were wounded. The incident that led to the gunfight was the arrest by the Earps of two drunken cowboys, who were members of the gang, for armed robbery.
Lawlessness continued in Arizona, and the Earps and Doc Holiday eventually left the territory.
Well-known people who were born today include game show host Pat Sajak, actress Jaclyn Smith (“Charlie’s Angels”), singer Natalie Merchant, writer Pat Conroy (The Prince of Tides, The Lords of Discipline) and U.S. Secretary of State and former U.S. senator Hillary Clinton.
