Good morning. Today is the 306th day of the year. It is the anniversary of the 1918 Malbone Street subway wreck in Brooklyn, near the Prospect Park station of what is now the Q line. It was in the middle of a strike, and the Brooklyn Rapid Transit company, which owned most of the Brooklyn lines that were later incorporated into the subway system, asked a crew dispatcher who had minimal experience as a motorman to drive the train. He exceeded the speed limit five times over. The train eventually jumped the track and slammed into a concrete wall, killing 97 people and injuring 100. The accident led to the phase-out of wooden train cars and the adoption of all-steel cars.
Well-known people who were bon today include political commentator Patrick Buchanan, researcher and author Shere Hite, singer k.d. lang and golfer Dave Stockton.

He will be accompanied by Josh Sharkey of Park Slope’s Bark, who will be preparing a special selection of the restaurant’s “artisan chic” hot dogs.

Sixpoint Craft Ales beers to be sample include Bark Red, a proprietary beer Sixpoint makes especially for Bark; Mason’s Black Wheat, the brewery’s fall seasonal beer; and others.
Bark hot dogs are made by an Austrian sausage maker, and will be served topped with a concoction of sweet bell peppers, pickled red peppers, mustard seed, red vinegar and more. Also served will be franks and beans, topped with smoky pork, mustard and onion.
The event will be held at a private home at 320 President St. For more information, call (718) 541-4378.
