Homelessness Is the Topic of Presentation at Precinct Council

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — At meetings of the 84th Precinct Community Council, which represents a group of communities stretching from Boerum Hill to DUMBO, the main topic of discussion is usually fighting crime, with traffic as a close second.

Two Sought in Robbery of Elderly Man at Lorimer Station

BROOKLYN (AP) — The NYPD is asking the public’s help in locating two men who robbed an 81-year-old man before pushing him onto the subway tracks.

The incident occurred Friday at the Lorimer Street subway station in Brooklyn.

Police say one of the suspects stole the man’s iPhone and when the victim gave chase the other suspect pushed the man, causing him to fall on the tracks.

WABC-TV reports the victim was taken to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

BROOKLYN —  State Senator Kevin Parker (D-Flatbush/Kensington/East Flatbush), Senate Democrats and Assembly members, along with family members who have lost loved ones to gun violence, joined forces at the state Capitol to urge the state Senate to include microstamping in this year’s budget proposal.

7 Years Later, NY Top Court Upholds Brooklyn Conviction

BROOKLYN — After reviewing the decision of a Brooklyn judge to allow a previous killing into evidence during a local man’s murder trial over seven years ago, New York’s top court has now affirmed the decision and upheld the conviction.

Last week, the New York State Court of Appeals upheld the murder conviction of Mickey Cass who had claimed he strangled his Brooklyn roommate under “extreme emotional disturbance” from childhood sex abuse that made him snap when the victim made unexpected sexual advances.

25 Judges Sworn In: Mayor Gives Oath to City Judges From Brooklyn and Boroughs

NEW YORK — Last week Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg swore in 25 judges to serve in the city’s Family, Criminal, and Civil Courts. The swearing-in ceremony included the appointment of two new Family Court judges, three new Criminal Court judges, and three new Civil Court judges. The mayor also reappointed four Family Court judges, and 13 Criminal Court judges.

Mayor Bloomberg was joined by Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs Carol Robles-Román, Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo and Executive Director of the Mayor’s Committee on the Judiciary Desiree Kim at the swearing-in ceremony in the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank Building acrosss the street from City Hall.

NEW YORK — New York’s chief judge urged lawmakers this week to require DNA testing for every felony and criminal misdemeanor conviction and to give defendants who plead guilty to serious felonies greater access to genetic evidence from crime scenes.
