Bring Your Kids to Work Day at Kings County Supreme Court

The Supreme Court Gender Fairness Committee hosted its annual Bring Your Child to Work Day program at the Kings County Supreme Court on Wednesday.

All court employees had an opportunity to bring their kids with them to work for the day where they were treated to lunch, learned CPR, participated in a mock trial and got their fingerprints taken.


Acclaimed novelist Junot Díaz to speak at St. Francis College

Author Junot Díaz's book “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” was recently named the best novel of the 21st century so far by BBC Culture.

Díaz will visit St. Francis College on April 16 as the latest speaker in the Walt Whitman Writers Series. He will read from his work answer questions from Isaac Fitzgerald (editor, Buzzfeed Books). He will also take questions from the audience.


Boxing and chamber music combine in ‘Strike!’

The International Street Cannibals (ISC) — a collection of seasoned musicians and composers directed by Dan Barrett — will join forces with young boxers from the legendary Gleason’s Gym in DUMBO for another round of “Strike!” — a special performance on Saturday, April 25 at 8 p.m. (77 Front St.)


Katy Clark named president of Brooklyn Academy of Music

Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Chairman Alan H. Fishman has announced the appointment of Katy Clark as incoming BAM president. She succeeds President Karen Brooks Hopkins, who will step down at the end of June. Katy Clark comes to BAM from New York’s Orchestra of St. Luke’s, where she has served as president and executive director since 2010.


Terror plot suspect arraigned in Brooklyn court

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A terror suspect accused of raising money for a plot to have U.S. residents travel overseas to fight for ISIS has pleaded not guilty.

Dilkhayot Kasimov was arraigned Wednesday in federal court in Brooklyn. His attorney entered the not guilty plea to counts of conspiracy and attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

Nine Injured In Crown Heights Fire

A fire broke out Wednesday morning in Crown Heights, engulfing three houses on St. Marks Avenue in thick plumes of smoke. Residents living in three houses numbered 1228, 1230 and 1232 had to escape the dangerous flames. Five firefighters and four civilians were being treated at Kings County Hospital, the FDNY told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle.

“The families had visitors,” said Tania Salters, community affairs officer at the 77th Precinct.


Snowden image makes brief return appearance at Fort Greene Park

A day after an unauthorized 100-pound bust of controversial whistleblower Edward J. Snowden was removed from Fort Greene Park, a group of artists projected a hologram of the bust in the exact same location.

A group called the Illuminators recreated the bust electronically for about 20 minutes on Tuesday morning, according to The New York Times. The Times quoted Kyle Depew, a member of group, as saying, “We wanted to further the discussion.”


Glory days coming back to Brooklyn Paramount Theatre

The legendary Brooklyn Paramount Theatre – where generations of Brooklynites applauded performances by stars like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby and Chuck Berry – is being restored to its former glory.

The grand, Rococo-style movie palace and live performance hall in Downtown Brooklyn became part of LIU Brooklyn’s campus in 1962 and now serves as a multi-purpose space and gymnasium.

The theatre will undergo a two-year renovation and reemerge as the LIU Paramount Theatre, according to LIU.

LIU Brooklyn baseball starts off homestand with 6-3 loss to St. John’s

The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds on Tuesday kicked off a stretch of games — during which they will play 10 of their next 11 at home in Brooklyn — with a 6-3 loss to St. John’s. It was a close game; they led 3-1 early, but slowly gave up the lead to the Queens powerhouse.
