Council subcommittee OKs Sandy zoning changes

A vote by a key City Council subcommittee that took place on Monday is the first step in an effort to cut red tape for Superstorm Sandy victims seeking to rebuild their homes, officials said.


$100K approved for Sandy repairs in Sea Gate

Treyger organizes softball game to help autistic kids

Councilmember Mark Treyger has beaten plenty of opponents in his political career, but on July 14, he won a victory against autism.

Treyger (D-Coney Island-Gravesend-Bensonhurst) organized a charity softball game at MCU Park to raise money for a Coney Island-based non-profit group that works to raise awareness of autism.


Jeffries, colleagues form caucus to take fresh look at justice system

A bipartisan group of House members, including U.S. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn, has formed a new caucus to look at ways to fix the country’s criminal justice system, it was announced this week.

Jeffries (D-Brooklyn-Queens) is a co-chairman of the Congressional Criminal Justice and Public Safety Caucus, along with his colleagues U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Indiana) and Cedric Richmond (D-Lousiana).


Coney Island Hospital dedicates new community health center

Coney Island Hospital on Wednesday dedicated its new community health center in Coney Island and named it for Ida G. Israel, a late community leader and long-time neighborhood resident.

The new Ida G. Israel Community Health Center is scheduled to open in late-August at 2925 West 19th St., between Surf and Mermaid avenues and across the street from MCU Park. It replaces the former center, which was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, and will restore healthcare services in the west end of Coney Island.


Matt Stonie tops Joey Chestnut in Hot Dog Eating Contest

Matt Stonie shocked the competitive eating world Saturday by upsetting Joey "Jaws" Chestnut at the Fourth of July hot dog eating contest at Nathan's Famous in Coney Island, thwarting Chestnut's bid for a ninth straight victory.

Stonie, 23, who finished second last year, downed 62 hot dogs and buns, beating Chestnut by two. Both are from San Jose, California.

As thousands of spectators observed the eaters on an elevated stage, the next closest competitor ate 35 hot dogs.

Pols, civic leaders want Coney Island shootings to stop

A coalition of civic leaders, clergy members, elected officials and everyday residents came together on Monday to demand action from City Hall to combat increasing gun violence in Coney Island.

There have been four shootings in Coney Island in the past week, according to Councilmember Mark Treyger (D-Coney Island-Gravesend-parts of Bensonhurst), who organized a press conference to shed light on the serious danger residents are facing. This year to date, there have been 12 shootings, Treyger said.


Diehl delivers as Cyclones beat Tri-City

Fortunately for the second-year Brooklyn manager, and the 7,876 fans gathered at MCU Park for the special promotional event Wednesday, Jeff Diehl was in position to send everyone home happy and help Gamboa avoid using his lone remaining reliever.

Diehl came through with a game-winning RBI triple in the bottom of the 12th inning as Brooklyn improved to 2-0 in extra-inning games on the young season with a heart-stopping 2-1 triumph over visiting Tri-City on Coney Island.


Wahlberg brothers preview Wahlburgers Coney Island

Donnie Wahlberg, Paul Wahlberg and Mark Wahlberg attend the Wahlburgers Coney Island preview party on Tuesday. The restaurant — the first of several locations to come to New York — will open to the public in early July (at 3015 Stillwell Ave.), serving gourmet burgers and specialty drinks made popular by the original fast-casual burger restaurant in Boston.
