Cops kill man suspected in ex's slaying outside NY casino

The hunt for a man suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend outside a casino ended Tuesday morning with police killing him in an elementary school parking lot.

The 51-year-old suspect had first targeted a man he found in a car with his ex at about 2:30 a.m. outside the Resorts World Casino in Queens, police said.

The suspect — believed to be a former employee of the casino — shot at the 51-year-old man, who escaped, police said. After trying to chase him, the suspect doubled back and shot the 55-year-old woman multiple times, they said.

New Brookdale Family Care Center Opens In Brooklyn

The oldest living person in New York joined in celebrating the opening of Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center’s new Family Care Center in East New York.

Susannah Mushatt Jones, AKA Ms. Susie, who is 116 years old and who has been seeking treatment at the Brookdale center, was present at the recent inauguration of the 5,500-square-foot facility at 1110 Pennsylvania Avenue, between Flatlands and Cozine Avenue.


Marine Park student wins Television Foundation Award

Aleksandr Rikhterman was the toast of Tinseltown during his recent stay in Los Angeles.

Rikhterman, a Marine Park resident who is a senior at the State University of New York at Binghamton, won a College Television Award from the Television Academy Foundation. The College Television Award mirrors the Emmys.  The coveted awards recognize excellence in student-produced entertainment and news content from college students all across the country.

The awards were handed out at the 36th Annual College Television Awards gala at the Skirball Cultural Center in L.A. on April 23.

A long-running feud between two men ended in bloodshed when a gunfight broke out at a funeral in Brooklyn, leaving one of them dead, police said Tuesday.


Panera breaks bread at Gateway Center

Borough President Eric Adams led Brooklyn lawmakers and businesses leaders in welcoming a new Panera Bread to the Gateway Center in East New York during the recent grand opening of the bakery-café.

Located at 528 Gateway Drive, the new Panera Bread celebrated its opening by giving away free coffee for a week to its first 250 customers.

The new Gateway Center location is expected to add a total of 60 jobs to the neighborhood, according to Panera Bread representatives.


Homeland Security agent fires shots at suspect in Brooklyn

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fired shots at a car driven by a suspect during a Homeland Security investigation in Brooklyn Tuesday.

Agents were trying to make an arrest during an undercover operation at Bradford Street and New Lots Avenue when one of several suspects drove his car towards a Homeland Security agent.


Firetruck sucked into Brooklyn sinkhole, 2 injured

A firetruck became mired in an enormous sinkhole that suddenly opened under its wheels at Linden Blvd. and Rockaway Parkway in Brownsville Tuesday morning, sending two firefighters to the hospital.

An FDNY spokesperson told the Brooklyn Eagle that the sinkhole appeared at 1235 Linden Blvd., directly in front of Brookdale Hospital.

The injured firefighters, working out of Canarsie-based Engine Co. 257, suffered minor injuries. They were sent to Kings County Hospital for treatment.

The company was not on a fire run at the time, according to FDNY.

Everybody needs a break from Hipsterville once in a while.

So Hipsters, take heed: When Billyburg gets to be a bit much, the L train offers an excellent escape — and we don't mean a ride to the East Village.

Try taking the Hipster Express (as the Urban Dictionary calls it) to the end of the line in Brooklyn — the Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway stop.

The trip from Williamsburg's Bedford Avenue station is just 27 minutes long.


Brooklyn man gets 22 years in prison for rape of teenage Gravesend girl

A 42-year-old Brooklyn man was sentenced on Tuesday to a prison term of 22 years to years to life for the 2013 rape of a young teenage girl in an apartment building basement.

In March, a jury found the defendant, Bennett Castello, guilty on counts of rape, sexual abuse and sexually motivated burglary. Castello, a Midwood resident, was sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Danny Chun.
