Brooklyn judge puts off LICH decision; focus on community needs assessment

State Supreme Court Justice Johnny Lee Baynes on Tuesday reserved his decision on the fate of Long Island College Hospital (LICH) after hearing final arguments from community groups that some of the rankings of the proposals should be tossed for not following the rules of the state’s RFP.

SUNY and the state Department of Health argued that the rankings should stand and the process of selling LICH should continue.

The popular Squibb Bridge, a pedestrian suspension bridge that many call "the Bouncy Bridge", opened March 21, 2013, as an connection between Brooklyn Heights, high on its famous bluff, and Brooklyn Bridge Park, which sits at sea level. Tuesday, a few hours before a Rosanne Cash concert in the park to benefit St. Ann's Warehouse, we surveyed a few people who walk that bridge.


Kings County Housing Court Bar Association celebrates 13th annual awards luncheon

The Kings County Housing Court Bar Association (KCHCBA) celebrated its 13th annual awards luncheon Monday at the Forchelli Conference Center at Brooklyn Law School. 

KCHCBA President Michael Rosenthal welcomed attendees with call for more members.  "This is not a landlord's bar," Rosenthal reminded seeking additional members from all aspects of landlord/tenant law. 

Brooklyn Housing Court Judge Hannah Cohen and court attorney  Damian Secaira-Cotto were among the afternoon's honorees.

Crown Heights Tenants Union protests for protections

As LICH lawsuits fly, Brooklyn patients must travel farther

It was a scene that has played out numerous times since Long Island College Hospital (LICH) was placed on ambulance diversion.

A man collapsed, unconscious, in his apartment in Brooklyn Heights. His girlfriend called 9-1-1. An ambulance from Brooklyn Hospital Center (BHC) arrived and EMTs assessed the patient, who was unresponsive. Eventually, he was wheeled downstairs, and EMTs gave the girlfriend a choice: Bring him to BHC, or New York Methodist?


Regina Opera's 45th season brings Verdi classic to Sunset Park

On Saturday, May 24, we attended Giuseppe Verdi’s great opera “Rigoletto” at Our Lady of Perpetual Help auditorium on 59th St. and 6th Ave., in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn.

This opera tells the story of Rigoletto, a court jester, who seeks revenge against the Duke who seduced his daughter, Gilda.  However, Rigoletto has been cursed and his plan for revenge is foiled.
