Adams announces first ever New Year's Eve ball drop in Coney Island

On Thursday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams with the partnership of Council Member Mark Treyger and the Alliance for Coney Island, announced the first-ever New Year’s Eve ball drop in Coney Island. The iconic Parachute Jump will be the site of a digital countdown display that will ring in 2015 along with a fireworks show.


Councilmembers want city to landmark Coney Island Boardwalk

One day in the future, you might be stepping on a city landmark when you take a stroll on the Coney Island Boardwalk.

Brooklyn Councilmembers Mark Treyger and Chaim Deutsch have launched a petition drive calling on the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate the boardwalk, which is officially named the Riegelmann Boardwalk, as a scenic landmark.

The two lawmakers are urging residents to sign the petition, which is available at and at their district offices.

Scammers targeted Sheepshead Bay's preeminent restaurateur, the late Irving Lundy, in the months before his September 1977 death. We just looked up the property records for 1901 Emmons Ave., the building where Lundy Brothers Restaurant was located, and found a jolting reminder of their perfidy.

The landmarked building, which still has Lundy's name painted on the outside of it, is currently the home of Cherry Hill Gourmet Market and a couple other tenants.

When the weather in Brooklyn was freakishly warm the other day, we heard the siren song of the shoreline calling us. All of a sudden, Sheepshead Bay seemed like a place we really needed to be.

NYPD: Brighton Beach man kills father, commits suicide

Police say a Brooklyn man stabbed his father to death and injured his sister before committing suicide.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the attack occurred around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the family's Brighton Beach apartment.

The NYPD says 59-year-old Voclodymyr Yeushchenko was stabbed in the neck.

Coney Island leader wins $5,000 grant from USA Network

A Coney Island civic leader who founded an organization 10 years ago to help the people of her community find jobs and housing has been nationally recognized by a cable television network for her work.

Mathylde Frontus, founder and executive director of Urban Neighborhood Services, received a $5,000 grant from the USA Network as part of its Characters Unite Campaign. USA Network representatives presented the check to Frontus at a dinner at Gargiulo’s Restaurant on Nov. 17.
