Brooklyn federal court unable to hear Interfaith Hospital board member’s claims

The Eastern District Federal Court has found that a Brooklyn hospital board member’s claims of First Amendment violations by her employer cannot proceed in federal court.

Julia James was a board member of the financially troubled Interfaith Hospital (Interfaith) — serving the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant — when Interfaith made the decision to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Following his acclaimed debut “Sacrifice Fly,” New York City public school teacher Tim O’Mara’s new novel “Crooked Numbers” (Minotaur Books) returns to the Williamsburg neighborhood to tell the story of Raymond Donne, a middle school teacher who has taken a break from his job to solve a mysterious killing.

Price tag for 141 Willoughby St. is $28 million

A Downtown Brooklyn development site across the street from the massive City Point project fetched a nice price: $28 million.

The Institute of Design and Construction was paid this hefty sum for its three-story building at 141 Willoughby St., city Finance Department records reveal. When the school and the purchaser, real estate private equity firm Savanna, announced the deal last month, they didn't disclose the price.

Many thanks to the tipster who alerted Eye on Real Estate when the deed surfaced online.

Own a piece of Fifth Ave. for $2.95 million

Here's your chance to join the ranks of Sunset Park's Fifth Avenue landlords. The price of admission won't come cheap, though.

Kenby Pharmacy owner Gilbert Zuckerman is selling the building his drugstore's in, 6024 Fifth Ave.

“I'm thinking of retiring in a few years,” said Zuckerman, who has owned the corner property since 1981, city records indicate. “Prices are up. Financing is good. It's a good time to sell an asset.”

The pharmacy will remain open after the sale, he said.

Shoppers go forth on Fifth in Sunset Park

Fifth Avenue Brooklyn – it's a tale of three Business Improvement Districts.

The retail corridor snakes like a spine through brownstoners' bailiwick Park Slope, through immigrant magnet Sunset Park, through middle-class and increasingly Middle Eastern Bay Ridge.

Each neighborhood has a BID of its own to represent merchants and landlords – and a personality of its own that draws shoppers forth onto Fifth....

Up All Night: Cuban coffee and cake 24-7 at La Gran Via Bakery

La Gran Via Bakery is a night owl's best friend, serving up Cuban coffee and cake 24-7.

“People come at all hours from very far away for the coffee,”said Royd Leyva, 29, a third-generation owner of the bakery at 4516 Fifth Ave. with sister Betsy, 33.

The siblings' parents and grandparents opened the Sunset Park shop in 1978.

The Sunset Park Fifth Avenue BID area has improved exponentially since then.

“When I was growing up, it was bad here,” Royd said.

Schumer wants New York to host another Super Bowl

The Denver Broncos probably didn’t think Super Bowl XLVIII was much fun, not after the 43-8 drubbing they suffered at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. But to U.S. Senator Schumer, the event was a smashing success.

It was so successful, according to Schumer, that he thinks the New York-New Jersey region should get the chance to host another Super Bowl.
