A Bay Ridge husband and wife who are dealing with the stress of having a young daughter with leukemia are opening their hearts to help another family struggling to cope with the devastating illness.


Christian Orthodox pastor leads Xaverian students in prayer

Xaverian High School was originally founded in 1957 as a Catholic educational institution for boys, but the Bay Ridge school actually has a diverse population that includes students who are Christian Orthodox.

For over 30 years, the Very Rev. Eugene N. Pappas, a renowned ecumenist, educator, missionary and social activist and pastor at Three Hierarchs Church in Brooklyn, has served as Xaverian’s Orthodox Theological Ministry instructor.


Art on the Corner presents an evening of ‘Crime Jazz’

“Crime Jazz” sounds like a music category like “Gangsta Rap” but it’s actually the name of a unique show that will be presented in Bay Ridge this month featuring music associated with crime and criminals.

The show is being presented by Art on the Corner, the arts program at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 7420 Fourth Ave., on Saturday, April 25, at 8 p.m. The concert will take place in the Soul Café, a venue located in the church building.


Bay Ridge activist leads NYC to DC March2Justice

Brooklyn is expected to have a strong presence at a planned protest march that will take demonstrators from New York City all the way to Washington D.C. on foot.

Linda Sarsour, executive director of the non-profit organization Arab American Association of New York, is the co-chairman of the March2Justice, a multi-day protest set to start on Monday, April 13 in which participants will walk from New York to Washington D.C. to deliver a “Justice Package,” a set of proposed law changes, to members of congress. The Arab American Association is headquartered in Bay Ridge.


American Legion band to perform at historic church

Veteran conductor Irwin Meyer will lead the Kings County American Legion Headquarters Band in a free concert at the historic New Utrecht Reformed Church in Bensonhurst later this month.

The concert will take place on Sunday, April 26, in the Parish House, a late 19th Century building located on the grounds of the church at 1827 84th St. at 2:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of Historic New Utrecht, a group that works to promote the history of the church and the surrounding community.


Bensonhurst school uses smart phones to combat bullies

At David Boody Intermediate School, students and teachers are using smart phones for a lot more than just texting and checking emails.

Boody is one of a handful of schools using Bridg-it School, a new program aimed at reducing incidents of bullying with the help of technology.

Invented by a Manhattan-based company called Bridg-it, Bridg-it School is an online program that allows students, teachers, parents and administrators to securely file a confidential report in less than one minute from anywhere at anytime.

Destroying documents is a good way to stop identity thieves in their tracks, Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-southwest Brooklyn) said.


Bay Ridge mom starts petition for half-day pre-k classes

The city’s universal pre-kindergarten program isn’t universally loved.

Andrea Stockton, a stay-at-home mom from Bay Ridge, said that while she loves the idea of giving children a head start in their education by having them attend pre-k classes, she’s not crazy about making the kids sit in a classroom all day.

The vast majority of the city’s pre-k classes are full day classes, according to Stockton, who said that half-day sessions would be better for some families.


New Utrecht High School grad serving on warship

Dania Bologna, a New Utrecht High School graduate, is serving on one of the world’s largest warships, the Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.

Bologna, a petty officer 3rd class, is an aviation ordnanceman aboard the San Diego-based ship, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that is one of only 10 operational aircraft carriers in the Navy today.

Ordnancemen are responsible for guns, bombs, missiles and other weapons aboard a ship.

"We build bombs and assemble missiles and rockets to be loaded on our F-18’s and helicopters,” Bologna said.
