Military veterans earn salute from Bay Ridge pols

Jose H. Hernandez and Thomas Karnes were serving in the First Calvary Division when their unit was engaged in battle on a hilltop near Bon Song in Vietnam on Feb. 22, 1966. They encountered a tremendous amount of fire. Hernandez was badly injured and Karnes dressed the wound, ultimately saving his buddy’s life. This act of courage bonded the two men together forever.


Halloween happiness at Brooklyn’s P.S. 127

There was magic in the air at P.S. 127 on Friday morning. For one thing, Principal Agatha Alicandro had turned into a lady bug. Assistant Principal Kerry Izzo Quaglione was a kitten.


Open House draws prospective students to Xaverian

Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge welcomed prospective students and their parents to an Open House on Oct. 19, where visitors were greeted on the front steps by the school’s Pipe and Drum Corps.

The Open House, which took place at the school at 7100 Shore Road, allowed students and families to learn all about the programs the school has to offer, according to Xaverian officials.

In the cafeteria, students had the opportunity to chat with representatives from every department of the school, as well as current parents and alumni.


DiNapoli seeks another term as state’s fiscal watchdog

Thomas DiNapoli is the first to admit that his job isn’t glamorous. But the New York State comptroller said that while it doesn’t grab headlines, his job is an essential one. “I feel that we are the backbone of state operations,” DiNapoli told the Brooklyn Eagle in an interview on Wednesday.

As the state’s fiscal watchdog, it’s DiNapoli’s job to audit governmental operations, root out wasteful spending and financial corruption, and oversee the state’s $176.8 billion pension fund.


Grimm-Recchia race enters final stretch

As the race between embattled U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm and Domenic Recchia entered the home stretch, the challenger was basking in the glow of a New York Times endorsement while the incumbent boldly stated in a WABC Radio interview that he is confident he will win.

The two candidates also took part in their final debate of the bruising campaign when they squared off at the College of Staten Island in a forum sponsored by NY1 and the Staten Island Advance.


What ever happened to Caledonian Hospital?

Developers Joseph Chetrit and David Bistricer, who are turning the Bossert in Brooklyn Heights back into a luxury hotel, have just made an empty Flatbush hospital building into an apartment house.

An old Caledonian Hospital building at 123 Parkside Ave. is now a luxury rental called 123 on the Park. It has unobstructed views of Prospect Park, a very fine amenity indeed.


Rookies go up against incumbents in 2 Bay Ridge races

In a redistricting process that took place in the early 1980s and that is still talked about in some political circles, Bay Ridge, which had up to that point been represented by a single State Assembly member, was carved up into several different districts.

As a result, local residents are represented in the assembly by lawmakers whose districts are dominated by other neighborhoods.


Students paint Halloween scenes on store windows

Customers doing their shopping at Bay Ridge stores on Tuesday were greeted by store windows containing scary scenes of witches, aliens, haunted houses, graveyards, Frankensteins and other frightening figures.

But they weren’t a bit scared. In fact, they loved it!


Golden-Kemmerer race heats up a week before Election Day

State Sen. Marty Golden is a man on a mission, according to sources in his re-election campaign. The lawmaker, who is running for a seventh term representing the 22nd Senate District in southwest Brooklyn, is focused not only on trying to win on Nov. 4,  but also on getting the lion's share of votes in the Bay Ridge portion of his district.


Five Poly Prep seniors earn nationwide academic honors

Five Upper School seniors at Poly Prep have earned nationwide academics honors, including three as National Merit Scholarship semifinalists and two students as National Achievement Scholarship  semifinalists. One senior also earned an award from the prestigious 2014-15 National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP).
