From Beirut to Bay Ridge

When John Abi-Habib was a boy growing up in Lebanon, he would always know when it was time to go to church on Sundays. The Abi-Habib family lived in a mountain outside of Beirut and John and his siblings would listen to hear the church bells coming from Mar Abda Church.

The bells signaled that it was time for Mass. “The church bells would ring and we would walk to church,” Abi-Habib told the Brooklyn Eagle in a recent interview at Mocha Coffee, a café in Bay Ridge.

Dunn served in the U.S. Navy from March of 1944 to April of 1946.

Gentile on the mend following surgery on both knees

Councilmember Vincent Gentile will have quite a tale to tell if he is asked how he spent his summer vacation.

The Bay Ridge lawmaker underwent a double knee replacement in July and is currently undergoing physical therapy at an NYU Lutheran facility located in the basement of Shore Hill, a senior citizens apartment house on Shore Road.

“I’m getting used to my two new knees,” Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) told Community Board 10 Monday night.

Number of homeless increases in Bay Ridge

With the city awash with reports of more homeless people living on the streets, solid, middle-class neighborhoods like Bay Ridge are not immune to the problem, according to local officials.

While the numbers of homeless in Bay Ridge are low compared to the rest of the city, the numbers are on the rise, said Community Board 10 District Manager Josephine Beckmann.

The merger is expected to be completed in January, Goldstein told Community Board 10 Monday night. It is contingent upon regulatory approvals from New York state.
