Greenfield provides mortgage help for homeowners

In an effort to assist struggling homeowners in his district, Councilmember David Greenfield is working with Brooklyn Housing and Family Services to provide free one-on-one mortgage counseling.

Greenfield (D-Borough Park-Midwood-Bensonhurst) is providing space in his district office at 4424 16th Ave. where homeowners who are in danger of losing their homes or have encountered changes in their financial circumstances can meet privately with an attorney.

The free consultation service will be available at Greenfield’s office on the last Tuesday of each month.

Congress race all set: It’s Gentile and Donovan for Grimm seat

The race to succeed Michael Grimm in congress is now set. On Thursday, Bay Ridge Councilmember Vincent Gentile formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination and will run against Republican Daniel Donovan in the May 5 special election.

Bay Ridge to welcome harmonica virtuoso

Jiayi He, a world-renown harmonica virtuoso, will be performing music by everyone from Stephen Foster and Johann Strauss in a special March 15 concert in Bay Ridge that is part of Art on the Corner, a music and art series presented at a local church.

He will present “Harmonica Harmony,” a concert featuring both familiar works and new compositions, on Sunday, March 15 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 7420 Fourth Avenue, at 3 p.m. The church is the home of Art on the Corner.

Assembly’s GOP members push anti-corruption measures

The New York State Assembly should never again have another Sheldon Silver, a lawmaker serving in the coveted post as Speaker for more than 20 years, according to members of the Republican minority in the legislative chamber.

The Assembly Republican Conference, which includes Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island) is renewing its call for a series of proposals to reform the way the Assembly operates to be adopted in Albany.

Pols demand discount on Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll

Staten Island residents get a break on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll, so shouldn’t the same courtesy be extended to Brooklyn drivers, or drivers from anywhere, for that matter? That’s the question three Bay Ridge lawmakers are asking.

On Feb. 24, State Sen. Marty. Golden and assemblymembers Nicole Malliotakis and Alec Brook-Krasny renewed their call for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to extend a discount program on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to cover any driver who has an EZ-Pass and who uses the Brooklyn-to-Staten Island span three or more times a month.

What's for rent on Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge?

We needed a break the other day after devouring donuts at Mike's.

Seriously — read our other three stories about the Bay Ridge donut shop. We were allowed to visit after hours to see donuts being made the old-fashioned way.

It was an awesome experience. But we needed a brisk walk after all the noshing we did.

The cold was beastly. But we headed down Fifth Avenue and counted how many storefronts are vacant or adorned with “For Rent” signs, or both.

Morning At Mike's

We spent the early hours of the night watching donuts being made.

So of course we wanted to see how night ends at Mike's Donuts — in those dark hours before dawn after the Bay Ridge shop opens its doors.

On the stretch of Fifth Avenue where Mike's is located, which is near Bay Ridge Avenue, it's pretty quiet after Mike's 4 a.m. opening.

How to survive in the donut business for four decades

Cheaper By The Dozen.

This is a concept they take seriously at Mike's Donuts.

A donut's a dollar at the Bay Ridge shop — but customers pay only $7.50 for a dozen and get a 13th one for free.

We had a chance to talk business when we were at the Fifth Avenue pastry lovers' paradise the other night, getting a good look at the art of old-fashioned donut-making. See related stories.

A Night At Mike's

We got a peek behind the scenes at a Bay Ridge pastry lovers' paradise where 100 dozen donuts are made each night — or double that number if the next day is going to be busy.

Some New Yorkers (especially Ben Stiller fans) long for a Night At The Museum. Snack seekers like us long for a Night At Mike's Donuts.
