Assemblyman Boyland charged with mail fraud

Monday, Loretta E. Lynch, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and George Venizelos, assistant director in charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), New York Field Office, announced charges of mail fraud against New York State Assemblyman William F. Boyland Jr. (D-Brooklyn).


When is art vandalism? When is vandalism art?

The colors enamor some as they take the subway to and from work. For others it is an eyesore that defaces building and brings down property value. It is graffiti.  

Those who spray-paint images and words on walls, buildings, and subways are often called “graffiti artists.” But is it art? Or is it an act of vandalism?


Mom of East Flatbush teen shot by police wonders why was he killed

Carol Gray, her head wrapped in a black scarf and her tearful eyes concealed by sunglasses, held up a photograph of her 16-year-old son, who was shot and killed by police.

The picture revealed a grinning boy wearing a blue cap and gown, his arms wrapped around his mother. It was taken the day he graduated from middle school.

"He was slaughtered," Gray told a room filled with reporters. "And I want to know why."


2nd Brooklyn Judge Clears Stop-and-Frisk Protestors

In November 2011, many Brooklyn residents came out to protest the controversial stop-and-frisk policy of the New York Police Department. During a protest in front of the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville, five protestors, Gbenga Akinnagbe, an actor on the HBO crime drama "The Wire"; Luis Barrios, Carl Dix, Morgan Rhodewalt and Gregory Allen were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.  All five defendants have been cleared of the charges.


3 cops hurt, 50 arrested, as anti-police rioters storm East Flatbush

For a third straight day, violent anti-police demonstrators gathered in East Flatbush Wednesday. By Thursday morning, 50 three police officers had been injured — one suffered a gash in the face after he was hit by an object tossed from a building — and 50 arrests reported.

The protests followed the fatal police shooting of a teenager over the weekend.


Ed panel votes to close 22 more NYC schools

The Mayor’s Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) voted to phase out or close 22 schools – 8 in Brooklyn -- at a raucous meeting at Brooklyn Tech High School Monday night.

The meeting lasted more than seven hours, attendees said, after more than 50 speakers beseeched the panel to end its policy of closing, rather than supporting, poorly performing schools. More than 150 schools have been shuttered under Mayor Bloomberg.

Case of dogs set on fire in Brooklyn raises concerns about animal cruelty

Authorities say they are looking for the suspects who set three puppies and a dog on fire.

The charred remains were found inside a bag on 91st Street near Ditmas Avenue, near a beverage distribution warehouse in Canarsie. A surveillance video shows a van arriving there after midnight Saturday. Several men are seen getting out carrying a large black garbage bag, setting it on fire near a trash bin and then driving off.

It's not clear if the animals were alive or dead when they were set on fire.


Top cop at 70th Precinct earns promotion

Eric Rodriguez, the commanding officer of the 70th Police Precinct, now has a shorter, but more prestigious title. The veteran cop, who formerly commanded the 68th Precinct in Bay Ridge, has been promoted from deputy inspector to inspector by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.


DISGUSTING: 4 dogs set on fire in Canarsie

Authorities are looking for the suspects who set four puppies and a dog on fire.

The dead animals were found in a bag on 91st Street near Ditmas Avenue in Canarsie area near a beverage distribution warehouse.

The ASPCA says the dogs were pit bulls or pit bull mixes.

Initially, authorities said a total of four dogs were found dead. Further investigation revealed an additional puppy.
