Another Dumbo? Gowanus real estate market is cooking

Could Gowanus become another DUMBO?

Broker Bob Klein thinks so.

The gritty but oh-so-cool neighborhood will see the pace of development pick up now that Whole Foods is opening its doors at Third Avenue and 3rd Street, the senior broker at Kalmon Dolgin Affiliates predicts.

“I'm getting calls from tenants moving out of DUMBO due to $50 per-square-foot rents,” he said.

Batcave begins reconstruction in Gowanus, not Gotham City

Somebody alert Robin – the reconstruction of the Batcave has begun.

The graffiti-crowned industrial building across the street from the new Gowanus Whole Foods doesn't belong to Batman's alter ego Bruce Wayne.

Squatters and graffiti artists devised the soubriquet for the building at 322 Third Ave. – which history buffs know as the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power House.

Whole Foods opening Dec. 17 on the banks of the Gowanus Canal

Good morning, Gowanus!

There were toxins in the soil, opposition from neighborhood artists and manufacturers, injured construction workers. Finally, Brooklyn's first Whole Foods Market is opening on Dec. 17.

Brooklyn Holiday Book Fair features vintage books and reading by Paul Auster

For the second holiday season, Honey & Wax Booksellers will bring independent Brooklyn bookshops and antiquarian booksellers to fill Park Slope's Old Stone House with rare, vintage, and out-of-print books in a celebration of the borough's rich history of printing, reading and writing. The event will take place on Dec. 7 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Giant menorah lights up Downtown Brooklyn for Chanukah

Rabbi Aaron L. Raskin, leader of Congregation B’nai Avraham in Brooklyn Heights, partnered with Joseph Bochetto, Branch Manager at New York Community Bank Borough Park’s branch on 13th Avenue, to light the candles on the seventh night of Chanukah at Brooklyn Borough Hall on Tuesday night.

Rabbi Raskin, atop a Con Edison cherry picker, used a propane torch to light the 25-foot-tall Rabbi Jacob J. Hecht Menorah.

As neighborhood booms, locals asked to plan the future of Gowanus

Things are moving fast in gritty Gowanus. An enormous Whole Foods -- complete with rooftop farm and bar -- is scheduled to open at Third Street and Third Avenue on December 17, artisanal shops and restaurants are sprouting up like kudzu along Third Avenue, and on Monday, the Lightstone Group began to prep its canal-side properties for a 700-unit apartment complex. A 10-court shuffleboard club is set to open early in 2014.

Technical deficiencies upset Brooklyn prosecutor’s weapons case

An incomplete description of charges and an incorrect definition of “school grounds” were grounds enough for a Brooklyn judge to dismiss two counts of weapons possession against a defendant.

Levin pushes for moratorium on charter schools

Charging that the city is facing skyrocketing costs for charter schools, Councilman Stephen Levin has introduced a resolution in the council calling on the Department of Education to place a moratorium on new charter schools.

Under Levin’s plan, the Dept. of Education (DOE) would refrain from opening any new charter schools in New York City. The self-imposed moratorium would be in effect until the DOE produces a detailed report of how the funding levels for charter schools will grow over the next five years.

Young Brooklyn Bridge climber talked down by NYPD Tuesday morning

Detectives from NYPD’s crack Emergency Services Unit talked a despondent young man down from one of the giant cables supporting the Brooklyn Bridge at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

The climber, described as a 23-year-old white man wearing a reddish-orange jacket, drew a crowd on the Bridge walkway and snarled traffic to Brooklyn as he climbed a cable on the southern side of the Bridge.
