Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Ron Chernow was honored by his peers this weekend and in turn shared a few tips about his craft.


New charter school opening in Downtown Brooklyn

Brooklyn Prospect Charter School said on Tuesday that it will open its first elementary school this September in Downtown Brooklyn (District 13). Starting with kindergarten, the school will take up the upper three floors of 80 Willoughby Street, alongside St. Joseph High School for girls.

Auxiliary members donate $60,000 to Lutheran Medical Center

Lutheran Medical Center will be able to install a new piece of medical equipment in the operating rooms thanks to a $60,000 donation from the hospital’s auxiliary. The Lutheran Medical Center Auxiliary, a fundraising arm of the hospital, announced the donation at its annual luncheon on May 15.


Sunset Park BID giving free WiFi to 5th Avenue

A two-mile stretch of Fifth Avenue will become a giant WiFi hotspot, enabling users to have Internet access as they walk down the street, shop in stores, and relax in their apartments, under an ambitious technology upgrade planned by the Sunset Park Business Improvement District.

The Sunset Park BID, which represents property owners, merchants, and residents on Fifth Avenue from 38th Street to 64th Street, has hired Sky-Packets, a Melville, Long Island-based company, to install equipment along the avenue to give the area WiFi.

Lopez faces tough, uphill race for City Council

Vito Lopez, the Brooklyn assemblyman accused of asking young female staffers to massage him, touch his cancerous tumors and join him in hotel rooms, resigned on Monday from the Legislature amid sexual harassment allegations. 

Lopez said many times that he was resigning not because of the charges, but to run for the City Council in the 34th District in Williamsburg and Bushwick, his historic power base. But a cursory glance at the race shows that Lopez has an uphill battle, to put it mildly.


Spider-Man will be swinging in to Brooklyn Public Library’s Summer Reading Kickoff

Do your kids like Spider-Man? Then get them to Brooklyn Public Library’s 2013 Summer Reading Kickoff on Thursday, June 6th.

That's when the cast of the hit Broadway musical "Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark” will be the special guests, with a free performance and a reading. The cast will also take souvenir photos with the kids.

It all happens at the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza from 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (All public schools will be closed for Brooklyn-Queens Day.)


Cyclists flood DUMBO for ‘Bike Home from Work Party'

Hundreds of cyclists wheeled their bikes to a “Bike Home from Work Party” on Pearl Street in DUMBO this past Friday.

The event, sponsored by Transportation Alternatives, capped Bike to Work Day and featured valet parking, a fashion show of reflective nighttime gear, food and pop-up shops.


Willowtown Spring Fair: Brooklyn Heights’ laid-back get-together

The 2013 Willowtown Spring Fair brought neighbors together on Saturday for a mellow day of music, food, sack races, tug-of-war and an architectural walking tour.

A boat with eight oars docked in the middle of Willow Street drew attention to a “boating adventure” raffle prize, and the old-fashioned jazz of Mona’s Hot Four had people dancing in the street. Iris Cafe and Waterfront Wine and Spirits provided food and drinks, and volunteers from Mickel’s Garden, led by Melissa Neel, sold plants to fund a new greenhouse and other garden improvements.
