Malliotakis tells Rutgers students to get active in politics

Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, who first won a seat in the Assembly at the age of 29, told a group of female Rutgers University students about her journey to elective office and urged them to think about careers in politics.

Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island) was a guest speaker at a recent panel discussion at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University and talked about why she decided to run for public office.


Schumer guest speaker at Xaverian HS graduation

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer was the guest speaker at the graduation ceremony for Xaverian High School, telling the Class of 2015 that they must not take for granted the privilege they have received in being educated at Xaverian, referring to the Catholic school for boys as one of the best in the state.

Schumer also spoke to the new graduates about the need to “go for it” as they navigate their future education, careers and personal lives.


Bay Ridge precinct council starts ‘Summer of Support’ for NYPD

Fighting what they termed an avalanche of negative publicity against cops, a coalition of Southwest Brooklyn civic and political groups announced the start of “Summer of Support,” a show of public support for the NYPD in which everyday New Yorkers are asked to sign pro-police message boards in lawmakers’ offices and other sites.


Spike in anti-Semitic crimes worries Greenfield

Councilmember David Greenfield, who earlier this year introduced a bill that would allow yeshivas and other religious schools to have city-funded security officers, is redoubling his efforts to get the legislation passed, charging that a recent spike in anti-Semitic crimes makes passage imperative.

This year to date, anti-Semitic crimes in the city have increased by 29 percent, according to Greenfield, who cited figures from the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force.


Donovan votes against THUD bill

The House passed a $55 billion transportation and housing bill, but the legislation passed without the support of the Republican member of the New York City delegation.

U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan said the Transportation Housing Urban Development (THUD) bill contained a $251 million cut to Amtrak.

The bill passed by a close vote of 216-210 on June 9.

Driving lessons would teach bike safety under new bill

With more and more people riding bikes these days, it makes sense for everyone – bicyclists and motorists alike – to learn to share the city’s streets, according to state Sen. Marty Golden, who is looking to change the driving lessons that New Yorkers take to include a special section on bike-pedestrian safety.


Three students share valedictory honors at Bay Ridge Prep

Bay Ridge Prep had not one, but three students who were named valedictorian for the Class of 2015.

The honor of being the valedictorian was shared by Solomiya Bavlovych, Monica Fainshtein and Hussna Javed.

Bay Ridge Prep, an independent, private school, held its 17th Annual Commencement Exercises on May 29 at the Brooklyn Museum’s Cantor Auditorium.

Keeping with a tradition Bay Ridge Prep has established, the graduation ceremony featured student speakers and performers who spoke about how valuable the Bay Ridge Prep experience has been to the graduates.
