Community board nixes educator’s idea to build science lab on Bay Ridge pier

A retired educator’s dream to get a marine science lab built on the Bay Ridge waterfront suffered a major setback on Monday when the local community board refused to add the proposed project to its list of city capital budget priorities.

As a result, the Denyse Wharf marine lab proposal that has long been sought by Thomas Greene could be dead in the water.

Hikind drives early bird muni-meter idea to DOT

The early bird catches the worm, as the old saying goes. But drivers in New York City who get to their destination early often find that they can’t pay the muni-meter for their parking space because the meter doesn’t go into operation until 9 a.m.

Assembly member Dov Hikind said that this minor urban annoyance is about to come to an end.


Bishop Kearney HS senior is scholarship finalist

A Catholic high school student from Brooklyn is close to getting the chance to fulfill her dream of a college education. Shannon Guerrero, 17, a senior at Bishop Kearney High School in Bensonhurst, is a finalist for the prestigious Peter M. Flanigan Scholarship, a program that provides up to $10,000 a year toward college costs.


Fall Harvest Festival brings country life to Brooklyn

If you walked into the Narrows Botanical Gardens in Bay Ridge on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 12, you might have thought you had left Brooklyn behind for a day to travel to the country. The Fall Harvest Festival was in full swing, turning the gardens into a giant pumpkin patch and filling the air with the sounds of country music.


Finalists announced for Brooklyn Senior Idol Contest

Fourteen talented contestants will be competing in the finals of the Brooklyn Senior Idol competition, a showcase for older adults with the show business bug. The contestants will put their talents on the line at the finals, which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Xaverian High School, 7100 Shore Road in Bay Ridge, at 7 p.m.

Rep. Michael Grimm, a Republican who represents Staten Island and part of Brooklyn, was to face his Democratic challenger in one of New York's most hotly contested races in a televised debate.

Friday afternoon's debate between Grimm and former New York City Council member Domenic Recchia was to stream live online and air Sunday on WABC-TV.


Audience gets to take part in brooklynONE’s ‘Romeo + Juliet’

It’s where Shakespeare meets “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” — and it's taking place in southwest Brooklyn.

Audience members will get the chance to interact with the cast in a new version of the Shakespeare classic “Romeo + Juliet” that is being presented by brooklynONE productions later this month.

“This is Shakespeare like Bay Ridge has never seen it before. We’re putting the audience right in the middle of the story,” said Anthony Marino, co-founder and artistic director of brooklynONE, a theater group based in Bay Ridge.


OPINION: CB9 — ‘We do not want skyscrapers’

He also states, in regards to development that has been planned, "...all we have to do is not get in the way."

Xaverian grad getting Navy vessel into ship shape

Seaman James P. Mallon, a 1997 graduate of Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge, is serving in the U.S. Navy as part of a hand-selected crew charged with bringing the Navy’s newest and most advanced amphibious assault ship into service.

Currently stationed in San Diego, Mallon is an interior communication technician serving aboard the amphibious assault ship America. When construction and sea trials are complete and the Navy officially accepts the ship from the builder, the ship will be placed into commission and will become USS America.
