Lawmakers lead effort to light Unisphere for cancer kids

The country’s tallest building, One World Trade Center, is going gold. Can the Unisphere be far behind?

Now that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has agreed to a request by Bay Ridge lawmakers to bathe One World Trade Center in golden light in a tribute to children with cancer, the elected officials are aiming to do the same to the Unisphere in Queens.


Shrek The Musical coming to Bay Ridge

The talents of young performers in Bay Ridge will be on full display in a special production of “Shrek The Musical” presented by the Narrows Community Theater starting Labor Day weekend.

The musical, starring Antonio Oliveri as “Shrek” and Jessica Sparacio as “Princess Fiona,” is being presented as the Narrows Community Theater’s (NCT) Fourth Annual Summer Youth Show.

Recchia unveils 1st campaign commercial, Grimm predicts win

There was no summer vacation for Republican-Conservative U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm or his Democratic opponent Domenic Recchia. In fact, things are just starting to heat up in this race as Labor Day approaches.

On Aug. 20, Recchia unveiled his first television commercial, a spot called “Saturday.” In it, the former Brooklyn councilmember appears to be offering the voters a look at his life as a husband and father as he goes about his business in both the Brooklyn and Staten Island ends of the district.


Bensonhurst gets summertime cleanup

Bensonhurst residents were greeted with clean, litter-free sidewalks on Wednesday, thanks to a community cleanup organized by Assemblymember William Colton and Councilmember Mark Treyger as part on an ongoing “Speak-Up & Clean-Up” campaign aimed at getting rid of trash and raising awareness about the importance of keeping streets and sidewalks clean.


City says raccoon found in Bensonhurst had rabies

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene issued a warning to Bensonhurst residents to stay away from stray animals and to safeguard their pets after a raccoon found in the neighborhood turned out to have rabies.


Vincent Gentile takes ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

It's a good thing Councilmember Vincent Gentile didn't wear a suit to work on Wednesday. He got soaking wet!

Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) took part in the summertime phenomenon known as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Wednesday morning outside his Fifth Avenue District office. Doing the honors were Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island) and Arlene Rutuelo, owner of Nordic Delicacies on Third Avenue. Both women had issued the challenge to Gentile.


Bay Ridge Unity Task Force revives its peace mission

In the wake of a series of attacks on Muslim Americans in southwest Brooklyn neighborhoods in recent months, the Bay Ridge Unity Task Force held a special breakfast meeting in a mosque Tuesday morning to begin planning a strategy on how to address hate crimes and promote peaceful co-existence between neighbors.


UPDATE: One World Trade Center to go gold

The Freedom Tower will be bathed in gold light in a tribute to the courage of children with cancer, thanks to a group of Bay Ridge lawmakers.

Two days after petitioning the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to have the majestic One World Trade Center tower "Go Gold" for kids with cancer, US Rep. Michael Grimm, state Sen. Marty Golden, Assemblymembers Alec Brook-Krasny and Nicole Malliotakis and Councilmember Vincent Gentile announced that their mission was succesful.


Bay Ridge pols take on ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

If you’re visiting Bay Ridge, don’t be surprised if you see people dumping buckets of ice water on each other’s heads.

The community has taken up the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in a big way.

The latest local celebrity to accept the challenge is Councilmember Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst), who agreed to have ice water poured on his head at his district office on Aug. 20.
