Brooklyn quietly leads the world in producing squash champions

Brooklyn Heights is widely known for many things: historic preservation; high real estate values; serving as home to numerous lawyers, investment bankers and writers; squash...SQUASH?

We're not referring to the vegetable. The internationally popular racquet sport played in a small room (18.5 x 21 feet) with a small, hollow rubber ball has been called the perfect urban game and was ranked the number one healthiest sport by Forbes in 2003.

The report came in to 9-1-1 at 7:42 p.m.

Long live art — in Red Hook

We spied some steel steers in Red Hook.

It sounds like a line from a limerick — but it happened the other day.

We were lucky enough to be walking down the street where sculptor Norbert Kimmel's studio is located, and his security gate was open. The artist let us snap photos of him and his endearing works. Besides the beauteous bovines, there were giant metal stalks swaying gently in the breeze.

Other performers included Ricky Blaze, Ruby Collins, Young Devyn, Olivia from VH1’s Love & Hip Hop,” Phearnone (Shayshahn MacPherson) and Star Laurel, along with Hot 97’s DJ Magic and DJ Young Chow.

Crazy about kitchens? Check out new showrooms — in Red Hook

Here's something you don't hear people say very often about hot Brooklyn neighborhoods: Mayan Metzler went to Red Hook to open a business because the rent was low.

He leased two locations for showrooms to sell upscale European kitchen cabinetry on the Van Brunt Street side of 141 Beard St., Greg O'Connell's historic 19th Century warehouse building.

“The truth is I had built three showrooms in two years — I was maxed out,” said Metzler, 37, who came to the metro area in 1998 from Israel. “I needed cheap space.”

On the market for $24 Million — in Red Hook

That's a big chunk of change for an auto-body shop building — $24 million.

But this is sought-after Red Hook we're talking about, and the Perfect Bodies Auto Collision site at 145-165 Wolcott St. is 80,000 square feet in size, which is a big piece of property.

Realty Collective, the seller's exclusive agent, has sent the offering memorandum for the property to development firms that are active in Red Hook, the brokerage's president, Victoria Hagman, told Eye on Real Estate.

Viva Italia — in Red Hook

Spending spree! For Red Hook real estate.

Est4te Four, the chi-chi developer from Milan that's turning iconic 160 Imlay St. into condos, is buying a fourth development site in the neighborhood, Eye on Real Estate has learned.
