Police had no duty to protect Brooklyn teen, judge rules

A high school student attacked by a group of kids and shot in the back after police departed the scene was not entitled to any special form of protection by the New York City Police Department or the New York City Department of Education, a Brooklyn judge ruled last week.

Pierson says unsafe northern Brooklyn streets need overhaul

Many of the streets in northern Brooklyn are too dangerous for pedestrians to cross, according to a City Council candidate who said the roadways are failing to “meet the needs of many residents.” Stephen Pierson, who is running against incumbent Stephen Levin (D-Greenpoint-Williamsburg) in the Sept. 10 Democratic Primary for the seat in the 33rd Council District, has released a nine-point transportation plan he said will improve public safety.


Hikind backs Thompson for district attorney

Calling him the “best choice for the Jewish community,” Borough Park Assemblyman Dov Hikind endorsed Ken Thompson for Brooklyn district attorney over the incumbent, Charles Hynes.

Hikind (D-Borough Park-Midwood), who represents a district with a large number of Orthodox Jews, has always had a reputation for being a political maverick. He announced his support for Thompson at a press conference in Borough Park on July 30.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Tuesday that the city’s Rockaway Ferry will make an additional stop at the Brooklyn Army Terminal pier at 58th Street in Sunset Park to provide a transit option for the Brooklyn commuters impacted by disruptions to the R train service between Brooklyn and Manhattan.


Missing 81-year-old LICH patient Celso Heredia discovered in Florida

An 81-year-old man suffering from dementia, Celso Heredia, who disappeared from Long Island College Hospital (LICH) in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn on July 24, has been discovered in Fort Pierce, Florida, according to the NYPD.

A Silver Alert had been issued last week after Heredia disappeared under mysterious circumstances. SUNY Downstate, which operates LICH, has been emptying the hospital of patients in an attempt to close it.


De Blasio calls for Brooklyn Hospital Authority with sweeping powers

Saying that city and state government are “fiddling” while Brooklyn healthcare is burning, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio on Monday released a four-pronged plan that calls for the creation of a Brooklyn Health Authority, with sweeping but temporary powers to transform hospitals and provide healthcare to the entire borough.

Superstar Jennifer Lopez hosted a block party on Flatbush Avenue on July 26 to celebrate the opening of Viva Móvil by Jennifer Lopez, a new Verizon Wireless retailer she founded with two companies, Brightstar and Moorehead Communications. Viva Móvil’s flagship location is at 162 Flatbush Avenue.

The former “American Idol” judge welcomed fans with a block party that included face painters and balloon artists, and a variety of food trucks.


Email confirmation of oral settlement suffices as signature, says court

The Appellate Division, 2nd Department, has ruled that a closing salutation in an email suffices as an signature valid enough to enforce an agreement.

In 2008, John T. Forcelli was injured in a 3-car crash in Westchester County. The other cars involved included a car owned by the Gelco Corporation and leased to the Xerox Corporation, and another driven by Steve Kuhn and owned by his wife Susan Landon.
