Indictments unsealed in Brooklyn Federal Court for fugitives charged with cyber-fraud

On Thursday, charges were unsealed against Romanian fugitive Nicolae Popescu, the leader of an international organized crime syndicate that ran a multimillion-dollar cyber-fraud scheme, and six other fugitives charged with participating in the same scheme. Interpol has issued notices to foreign law enforcement partners seeking assistance in the apprehension of these fugitives, and the FBI has also released “Wanted” posters to facilitate their arrests. 


Former hip-hop manager convicted in Brooklyn Federal Court

Following a three-week trial, a federal jury in Brooklyn on Thursday returned a verdict convicting James Rosemond, also known as “Jimmy Henchman,” of being the leader of a continuing criminal enterprise (the “Rosemond Organization”) that distributed thousands of pounds of cocaine, the majority of which was sold on the streets of Brooklyn and Queens. 


State has $40K settlement with Gowanus hotel for price-gouging in wake of Sandy

New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman on Thursday announced a settlement of more than $40,000 with MMG Butler Street LLC, a Delaware-based corporation that operates the Holiday Inn Express hotel at 279 Butler St. in Gowanus.

Prospect Park to close Friday for Obama's visit

Prospect Park will be closed Friday due to a visit by President Barack Obama.

The 500-acre park will be closed from noon to 6 p.m. Friday when the president visits a nearby high school.

Obama is to arrive by helicopter in the park.

The president is scheduled to visit Pathways in Technology Early College High School in Crown Heights. He praised the school in his State of the Union address this year for its innovative program.

SUNY presses to keep control of LICH, tells judge, ‘You can’t unscramble the omelet’

In a filled-to-capacity hearing in Downtown Brooklyn, attorneys representing SUNY Downstate Medical Center continued to press their case Tuesday afternoon that state Supreme Court Justice Carolyn Demarest has no basis to reconsider her 2011 order transferring Long Island College Hospital (LICH) in Cobble Hill to SUNY Downstate.

“This transaction has been consummated and can’t be undone,” argued attorney for SUNY David Dunn, adding, “you can’t unscramble the omelet.”
