The nonprofit Empire Mock Trial Association ("EMTA"), in conjunction with NYU Mock trial, is pleased to invite you to our eighth annual Downtown Invitational mock trial tournament on Jan. 25-27 at Kings County Supreme Court. Each year the Downtown brings together 16 of the top collegiate trial advocacy teams. This year's field includes Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Virginia and the defending national champion, Florida State University.

BHA hosts online library branch survey

On Dec. 12, as the Brooklyn Daily Eagle has reported, the Brooklyn Public Library unveiled seven proposals for the redevelopment of the site of the Brooklyn Heights Branch Library.

Now, the Brooklyn Heights Association has prepared an online survey for its members and neighbors about the various proposals.


Brooklyn jury awards $62M in med-mal case

A Brooklyn jury awarded $62 million to a woman who lost her hearing and both of her limbs after a seemingly routine surgical procedure at a Long Island hospital.

Stacey Galette was awarded $58 million for pain and suffering and over $3million in special damages on Friday following a three-month trial in Brooklyn's Supreme Court. Galette sued Winthrop-University Hospital on Long Island and three doctors after the 2009 laparoscopic removal of an ectopic pregnancy.

Best Buy cited by OSHA for blocking emergency exit at Brooklyn store

After receiving a complaint about a blocked exit at the Brooklyn Best Buy store at 625 Atlantic Ave., in the Atlantic Center mall, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the national electronics chain for one repeat violation of a workplace safety standard. The retailer, which had previously been cited for the same condition, faces a proposed fine of $27,500.

LICH supporters slam SUNY's Fortis-NYU plan as 'smoke and mirrors'

Doctors fighting to save Long Island College Hospital (LICH) in Brooklyn say that SUNY's plan to sell LICH's real estate to Fortis Property Group with an NYU-supplied "free-standing Emergency Department" is "smoke and mirrors." 
The proposal calls for LICH's valuable real estate to be developed into condos, with NYU-Langone and Lutheran Medical Center offering outpatient medical services and the free-standing ED.

Revised Proposal for LICH unveiled amid dire warnings

With a backdrop of threats to SUNY institutions and dire predictions, a revised proposal to purchase Long Island College Hospital (LICH) that now includes two well-respected health institutions was displayed at a SUNY Board of Trustees meeting on Monday.

The original proposal, submitted by Fortis Property Group, would have leased the hospital’s main building to ProHealth for a “medical mall” and developed the other LICH buildings as condos.
