No booze for you! Opening of “Top Chef” winner Ilan Hall’s restaurant at Williamsburg Urban Outfitters is delayed
Eat, drink and be merry at Williamsburg’s new Urban Outfitters? Not until May Day.
The youth-oriented clothing chain with a bar-restaurant inside it opened Friday – minus the much-anticipated in-store eatery.
The foodie-fave transplant from Los Angeles, which is called The Gorbals and belongs to “Top Chef” Season 2 winner Ilan Hall and his business partner Natan Zion, is now aiming for a May 1 opening.
“It’s about getting the menu right, hiring staff and being up to the standard Ilan wants it to be,” Urban Outfitters spokeswoman Crystal Carroll told the Brooklyn Eagle.
Restaurant co-owner Zion told the Eagle in February that The Gorbals would open for lunch the first week of April, and begin dinner service in late April.
The Gorbals is located on a mezzanine hanging above the third-floor men’s department of the multi-story store at 98 N. 6th St., which Urban Outfitters is calling Space Ninety 8.
The restaurant is enclosed with a wall of opaque glass panels, so shoppers and drinkers won’t be eyeballing each other.
A peek through glass entry doors Friday revealed a lit-up, glowing bar.
The Gorbals will also use the building’s rooftop, city Buildings Department records indicate.
Urban Outfitters kicked up controversy last year when it revealed that it planned to sell booze inside the N. 6th Street store.
A flood of write-ups followed about Urban Outfitters’ youthful target customers shopping with beer goggles on. Gothamist hilariously dubbed the planned store “Urban Drunkfitters.”
