On Wednesday, New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer held a Town Hall meeting with the Starrett City Tenants Association meeting at the Brooklyn Sports Club, in Spring Creek. More than 150 residents packed the room to meet the comptroller and voice their concerns for the future of their neighborhood. At the top of residents’ agendas were housing affordability, public transportation, pensions and affordable access to services, including internet.

The comptroller gave opening remarks and moderated an open Q & A with residents. With his community affairs staff, he committed to taking action on the inquiries and using his city-wide platform to address them.

“I am here to listen to what you have to say, so we can work collaboratively on the issues that impact you. My job is to audit and investigate, and hold City Hall accountable — to make sure we are providing for everybody in the city,” he said.

Starrett City was built as a Mitchell-Lama community in East New York, Brooklyn, to accommodate housing needs of middle-income families. Residents have fought to preserve its affordability, an issue Stringer noted they have in common.

“My community was red-lined as a kid, so I understand very well what it is like for people to come to a neighborhood and build it from scratch. You are the people who helped to build this community, and now speculators are coming in and want a piece of the action. I am here to tell you that you have a right to be included in the planning and decision-making processes, and my office can and will help you with this.”
