NYU Langone opens ambulatory care center in Bay Ridge

A Bay Ridge building that formerly housed the city’s Human Resources Administration (HRA) has taken on a whole new purpose. NYU Langone Health announced the opening of the first phase of a new health center to serve the community.

NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Bay Ridge, located at 6740 Fourth Ave. will provide primary care as well as a variety of subspecialty services, according to hospital officials.

The orthopedic section of the new facility recently started accepting patients. Located on the building’s fourth floor, the section will be offering hip and knee reconstruction, spinal surgery, hand and wrist surgery, and pain medicine. The fourth floor also houses X-ray imaging services.

Dr. Andrew Brotman, senior vice president at NYU Langone, said the new facility is part of NYU Langone’s effort to expand its reach into Brooklyn to provide a variety of health care services to borough residents.

“This large multispecialty ambulatory center is part of NYU Langone’s overall commitment to provide increased health care services in Brooklyn. The total number of office visits to see NYU Langone physicians is more than 6 million. We need to provide more options directly in Brooklyn neighborhoods so patients have more convenient options for high-level care,” said Brotman, who is chief clinical officer at NYU Langone and is also the vice dean for clinical affairs and strategy.

Other medical sections will be moving into the Fourth Avenue building over the next several months, NYU Langone officials said. The phased-in move is expected to be complete by summer 2018.

Once the center is fully operational, it will offer a range of services: internal medicine; podiatry; cardiology (including echocardiography stress tests, ultrasounds and nuclear imaging); ear, nose and throat (ENT); gastroenterology; breast surgery consultations; obstetrics, gynecology and gynecologic oncology.

Any follow-up surgical procedures a patient requires can also be done at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn, formerly known as NYU Lutheran Medical Center, at 150 55th St. in Sunset Park.

The 35,000-square-foot NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Bay Ridge will encompass all four floors of the four-story building.

NYU Langone plans to hire more than 60 physicians and other medical staff for the new medical center.

Located on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Senator Street, the building housed HRA services for many years and was then occupied by a city-run job center.

In an interview with the Brooklyn Eagle in April, Brotman said the goal of establishing a facility at that location is to provide a one-stop health care facility for patients.

The new facility will offer provide top-notch outpatient health care in a non-hospital setting, according to Brotman.

“We are undergoing changes in the delivery of health care in this country and are moving toward an ambulatory care system. More and more people like to go to non-hospital settings,” he told the Eagle.

The Fourth Avenue building fits in with that model, Brotman said.

The site was selected for a number of reasons. “It was available because the city was moving out,” he said. The building is also accessible to public transportation. It is located one block away from the Bay Ridge Avenue station on the R subway line and is close to the B9 and B64 bus lines.
